How to choose a coat
Length. A coat that ends at the hip or just below it works with trousers and short dresses and is easiest to move in. A mid-length coat, ending around the knee, covers most skirt and dress lengths. A long coat, ending at the calf, is the warmest and makes the most of a single colour worn head to toe.
Cut. A relaxed or oversized coat is made to go over a thick sweater; check the shoulder seam, which should sit at or just past your own shoulder. A tailored coat sits closer to the body and looks sharper over a shirt or a fine knit, but leaves less room underneath.
Size. Measure a coat you already own across the chest, from armpit to armpit, and compare it with the size chart on each product page. If you plan to wear chunky knitwear underneath and you are between sizes, choose the larger one.
Colour. Camel and ivory brighten grey and black; a black or charcoal coat goes over anything. If you are buying one coat for the whole winter, a neutral you already wear most will earn its place fastest.
